Do you remember the desks in your first school classroom? Were they comfortable? Did you feel safe and at home in them? Could you see over them? Were they too small or too big for you?
Desks in school disconnect us from our body they are typically too small or too big. We learn to be in our heads. The root chakra is at the base of your spine and includes your legs and feet. A simple way to get the energy flowing is to bring awareness from your mind to the base of your spine. Feel the energy there and invite it to your feet.
Most Canadians are immigrants, so as a nation we are disconnected from the roots of our ancestors. What happens is when people move, they leave their country of origin and culture. Song, dance, food, beliefs and values all keep people rooted and on the ground.
In my root chakra group workshop I worked with a woman who had no awareness of her ancestral origin. It was a topic that her family avoided and was surrounded by shame.
When she took the root chakra course, I encouraged her to discover her ancestry, to ask the hard question: Where did we come from? She went home, asked and got a very short answer: Iroquois and Spanish.
It was a mixed response: she was excited to learn who she was but it felt like a shut door as her family did not want to reveal any more. I saw this as an opportunity, now she had the seeds that she could plant and begin grow.
I encouraged her to explore the two cultures. To discover and then experiment with the music, food, dance even learn the geographic location, weather and history of both cultures.
As she developed a stronger sense of her ancestral roots, a dramatic change occurred in how she appeared in the world. She walked taller. She would willingly look people in the eye and initiate conversation. She began doing things that she had shied away from before. And she did them with confidence. Connecting to her roots allowed her to connect with the world, to feel secure and stronger. She knew who she was.
Our root chakra is what roots us to the earth. To the world around us. Similar to the root system of a potted plant, if the root system is not strong and supported them the plant cannot thrive. It will be weak and wilted. When our root chakra is weakened, so are we. We become the weak and wilted plant. When we strengthen our root chakra we have the base identity and security to bloom, to thrive in this world and be strong in our sense of self.
