Thanksgiving… is a time to give thanks. Thanks for what? Likely all of the things we take for granted here, in Canada, on a daily basis. Like what? Gratitude for: the fresh air, no bombs, food in the supermarket, ability to walk freely in cities, towns and the country.
Then there are friends and family, coworkers and bus drivers, and baristas … the people you see everyday who bring a light to your eye and smile to your lips. There can be many thanks for that. Pets! How could I forget pets? this year has been the ‘year of the sick dog’ for me! There is nothing like the possibility of death and loss to heighten the thanks for the love we have with someone, something.
Thanksgiving, in general, is a time to give thanks. Historically, it was a time to give thanks for the harvest. The crops from the fields have been brought in by this time. The farmers and farmers’ children have been working hard during September to reap the fruits of their labour before the snow flies or the frost bites. My two best friends at university were farm girls and they went home every weekend, and even extended the weekends sometimes by a day or two, to help get the crops off the fields.
Now I live in Vancouver – and am incredibly thankful for Costco and my little Asian fruit and vegetable market.
Did you know that the first Thanksgiving celebrated in Canada was said by the explorer, Frobisher to give thanks for safe passage? He was grateful to have survived his exploration for the Northwest Passage in Nunavut. I am grateful for Canada’s North. Especially the people, who showed me how to belly-laugh like no-where else in the world.
What are you thankful for? Your sight? Sense of hearing? Laughter? That you can cry? Turkey dinner? Pumpkin pie? Take a moment or more, reflect and share… it’s like yawning. Gratitude is contagious.
