Welcome to the World of Energetic Intelligence
Do you remember this childhood song: “Head and shoulders, knees and toes, knees and toes…”? It was so much fun to learn and sing – I remember pointing to my nose and ears and laughing as I sang. Check out the podcast here, if you prefer to listen.
Did you ever wonder why we were taught this song? It had a function: to identify and name our body parts so that if you hurt yourself when you were a kid, you could then point to the body part and say where you hurt. As your knowledge and understanding expanded, you learnt how each part functioned. There were other parts inside that you couldn’t see but because you knew about the outside parts, you believed that you had organs, bones and muscles. Then you could learn how each of those functioned! Finally, in high school, you’d learn how the different systems impacted each other. Biology 12 was one of my favourite topics – because it was all about how our physical body works. Armed with knowledge and understanding, it is possible to make healthy choices for yourself in life.
We have another body system that affects our wellness and bodymind. These are our energy centers, sometimes referred to as chakras. The chakras are as real and tangible as your elbow or nose. You can see energy in a light bulb when it is turned on. Your internal energy centers do not have an off/on switch. In fact, they are on all of the time. However, they are sometimes really, really small or really, really big or somewhere in between. They could be full to bursting or feel empty. Sometimes they are small in the front and bulge out in the back. Other times they are split in two. These energy centers impact your experience in the world and can bring health and wellness or disease and discomfort.
I worked with a woman who had a distinctive split in her root energy center. This center is associated with security, stability and safety. She had grown up in two different countries. The impact on her adult life was that she could not feel rooted in any one place. She described herself as constantly hopping between places. She could stay at a job for a couple of years and then was compelled to switch. Even her love relationships were split. When she became aware of her root energy and her patterns, she could have conscious choice and a felt sense of the difference. Her root chakra merged into one and she was able to settle into her life and experience a sense of security. The interesting thing was that she moved in her job, as she flew from one country to another. The difference was that she could plant herself in one place and base from there. Her job and relationships were secure, and as she was nourished, she grew.
It’s hard to believe in things we can’t necessarily “see” in the traditional sense, especially when we are not taught about them. I’ve reworded the anatomy song to describe the chakras: “Wisdom, psychic, expression, love, express love…” And you could learn to touch the top of your head, your forehead, your mouth and throat, your upper chest and … to accompany the song. As we learn to connect with these energy centers it is easier to “tune in” and sense when an area feels “off” – that you may be blocked or excessive on the energy scale. By recognizing and identifying energy in our bodies, we strengthen our bodymind and deepen our emotional intelligence. When your understanding and insight of that energy center increased, you could identify the impact on your emotional, physical, spiritual and intellectual well-being. How cool is that?!
Instead of only interacting with health and wellness in a one dimensional way – the physical, medical system – you could increase your wellbeing from a quantum approach – the energy system. I do fully appreciate that we are incredibly fortunate in Canada to have to medical care that we do … and there are so many other ways to be well! A proactive approach to wellness is one of them. Are you a person who waits to get sick or do you keep yourself healthy? Do you believe in a holistic approach to health? How connected are you to your energy centres?
To increase your connection to your chakras: bring awareness to different areas of your body and breathe into them. You may feel some heat or coolness. There may be pain, tension or fluidity and ease. Some people see colours or images. Others have sensations or tingling. You may notice something completely different! Be curious about what you notice – no right or wrong, simply awareness. You could journal about what you observe.
Top of head (crown chakra) = wisdom, knowledge, connection with spirit.
Forehead (third eye) = psychic, ability to see beyond “seeing”
Mouth, neck (throat) = expression of all chakras
Heart, chest = love
Solar plexus = power, unique self
Below belly button = creativity, sexuality
Base of spine = roots, connection to tribe/ancestry.
Simple awareness can connect you to yourself in a new way and build peace and clarity.
