I have recently integrated craniosacral therapy working with dogs and their owners. I begin the session with the dog, determine where they have holding patterns and use gentle touch to release the tension.
To continue and deepen the treatment, I also work with the owner – again releasing holding patterns so that it is possible for the owner to connect with their dog in a way that is restorative for both. This can be continued at home – which supports and continues the healing of the theraputic work on the dog.
I have found interesting correlations with what I feel under my hands and the description of the history of the dog. Wild animals can shake off trauma but domesticated animals can hold onto trauma, similar to humans. This could partially be due to the emotional-energetic connections dogs have with their owners. When supported in letting go dogs very easily release tension. As in humans, this is easier in younger dogs than older dogs.
