Does your brain need a break? Are you relying on caffeine to get through the day? Are you popping pain pills to fight off that nagging headache? Living in a gym or yoga studio to de-stress and find balance in your life? If this is you, read on!
Many people wake up their brain with caffeine first thing in the morning. The best thing is a cup of java or a cuppa tea! “I can’t get started without my morning hit of caffeine.” “I get a headache if I don’t have some coffee in the morning.”
If not your morning cuppa joe, then maybe you NEED that endorphin gym hit. This is arguably a healthier, albeit more time consuming solution. Exercise gets your neurotransmitters firing and wakes up your whole body and brain.
Why do we need this? Because we live in a world of stimulus.
Weeeewhoooo, weeeewhooo – sirens, lights, noise, computer screens, movement driving, walking, biking, people calling you, daylight…. all bombarding your brain. It can be lovely, stimulating, exciting and invigorating…. Until you feel that headache coming on or a brain fog slowly descending.
So what do you do? Increase your caffeine intake? Self medicate? Move to a deserted island? Sounds good, but not the most practical or healthy options. However, there is an EASY solution that can be done in 30 seconds.
Gently take the palms of your hands and cup them over your eyes. (Take your glasses off first!). Your hands are soft and warm and they cut out all of the visual stimulus that has been hitting your eyes and brain. Breathe. Count if you want to – give yourself at least 20 seconds, or top it up to 30 for an extra treat.
Try it now and enjoy giving your brain a break!
Instant relief? You could take it to the next level and try doing the exercise throughout the day. Set up a quick chime on your smart phone and give yourself a 30 second count down. Your eyes and brain will thank you!
In 30 seconds you are able to give your brain a much deserved break, resulting in less tension, stress and overwhelm. It will help you to naturally prevent headaches, increase you clarity and give you more patience to deal with the world around you.
I “discovered” this gem when I was recovering from my brain injury 2 ½ years ago. The headaches were excruciating and I could barely function over a period of months. These short, simple 30 second brain breaks were a breath of fresh air and huge relief to ease stimulation overload. A practical, easy ‘to do” solution was literally in my hands and accessible anywhere, any time.
You work hard, you deserve a break. Take the time and treat yourself to a 30 second brain break. You won’t regret it.
