I had a call acouple of days ago from a girlfriend who has an admirable ability to juggle many demands at the same time. She was so excited: “Balance is a farce!” she stated, and broke into releived laughter.
I was confused. What did she mean? “In nature there is never continuous balance, it is a constant rebalancing. In an hour, say, there will be moments of balance which add up to a total of 2 minutes. The rest of the time the system is on one side or the other.”
Me: “So you can drop some balls and it’s OK?” Her: “Yes!”
That brought to mind what I see happening with clients and in my own life, on a regular basis. When there is a shift, be it emotional or physical, the sense of balance is changed. This is a good thing because it is possible to hang onto “false” balance for so long in one way that it ends up pulling one off of balance.
The other thing that can happen is that the body tenses to achieve balance, and when the balance changes then it can tense even further in the same direction because that is what it knows – gradually becoming more and more twisted over time.
When the physical and emotional metaphors are combined, it is possible to gain some interesting insights. For example, if someone leans slightly forward, they could be spending too much time imagining or “living in the future”. If they discover that they can be safe and comfortable in the present, their physical center shifts so it becomes possible to live in the present. Sounds desirable? Yes. However, even the most subtle shift can be initially disorienting, until the new sense of balance is integrated.
Moving into balance is a constant experience of unbalance. It is a fine art and one to be appreciated and explored.
